This project serves me well. I make music again. Once I’d got my first record deal the joy left a little bit. Making music, my hobby, had become my business. When I lost my first record deal, the music business became my business and the music stopped. But it’s not just that. In trying to find a way to present my ambient noodlings, I started syncing it with little videos I was shooting. Itt got me out of the house to seek interesting things. A sunset, a frosty morning, a mist filled forest. Anything pretty or interesting works. It turns out it’s really good to seek out beauty. But last Thursday it found me. A sunset that turned the sky purple and red and pink and yellow. As I looked to Brighton Pier thinking life couldn’t get much better I spotted the murmation, a wondrous site. I put the film to a 15 minute recording that felt equally serendipitous when I was making it that I’d called “Farewell Jupiter” a two track recording. The first from a Roland Jupiter 8 through a couple of pedals. It sounded cool as I was packing down my gear and about to head home and thought I’d finished. But then I sat at the Fender Rhodes and just kept playing this mantra like repetitive progression just came. I’d found something. That elusive thing. It’s not magic but it’s something. It’s probably my favourite piece I’ve made public so far. It’s far from perfect.
