Is there anywhere more beautiful than Cuckmere Haven? Especially from here, the beach in front of you, the winding river to the sea, the chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters trailing off into the distance. This, the still spot for 1000 paintings, a million photographs. And now, my little video. I didn’t shoot much. It was a family walk, where we were all together again, full of life and laughs and love. But finding music to sit nicely with the footage was tough. I kept trying out different tracks I’d recorded but it was all too busy, too modern. I needed to simplify, to sync with pure nature, Mother Earth. So I sat at the piano, the Woodchester, to try to find something that might be worthy of this view. The piano needed tuning, mid-winter in the shed taking its toll. I can never sit still. So all the dissonance and shuffling went into the recording. But that’s ok. It’s human, right? There’s not much human music these days. All in the box, all zeros and ones churning it out at 100,000 tracks a day, sometimes with humans at the controls but often just robots. It’s becoming rare to hear music in the room, warts and all. But this is me. Old and a bit knackered, just like my piano, trying to find something that works. If you like it you can listen to the full-length track on Bandcamp.
